The short answer to this according to a post on the WIA is “any”.
Wow, thats a lot different from what we have been led to believe. It looks like the WIA argued that amatuer’s can build thier own equipment and use it without the need for us to have the equipment tested and approved first. You can read thier article titled Permitted Equipment For Amateur Use.
When you take the time and read the legislation that’s correct. We can own any radio equipment we like. We have some rules around emissions, interferance, frequencies and power that we need to follow, but these rules point to actions we take, not the equipment we have. We can’t operate a transmitter on frequencies outside of what we are licensed for. Operate is an action, not a possession. We are not allowed to transmit on a power level higher than we are licensed to do, again an action restriction. There is nothing in the legislation saying that we cannot posses a radio that has the ability to transmit at a higher power level than we are licensed for.
As another supporting point for this view, when reading the Radiocommunications Licence Conditions (Apparatus Licence) Determination 2015 part 1 is preliminary stuff while part 2 is where the rules are and it has a heading “Operation of transmitters – general conditions”. It’s “OPERATION”.
So I’m sure as a licensed amatuer radio operator I can make, buy, get, own, give away or sell any transmitter I like, but I can only use it within the rules.
